Edo Election: PDP commences inspection of ballot papers

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State, has commenced the inspection of electoral materials used by the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, in the September 28 governorship election in the state.

This is against the backdrop of an ex-parte motion the Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin, led by Justice A. T. Badamasi, granted the PDP and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the recent election.

Following the emergence of the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Godwin Obaseki as the winner of the governorship election in the state, the PDP had filed an ex-parte motion seeking the inspection of ballot papers used in the election‎.

‎In line with the court ruling, the inspection of the ballot papers commenced at the INEC state headquarters in Benin.

However, representatives of the APC were said to be absent as the ruling party has filed a petition before the tribunal to challenge the commencement of the exercise.

Reacting to the absence of APC’s representatives, PDP’s lawyer, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, in a chat with reporters said it opted to go ahead with the earlier court directive because APC’s suit had not been heard by the court.
